My dad wanted me to apply to some colleges really last minute, so I did - I turned them in and got an email confirming my application. In my application portal it says that my letter of recs still haven't been submitted, even though they're submitted for my other applications.

do I need to email my teachers and ask them to submit it or will commonapp automatically submit it for me?

Okay, I know most of us a gracious, tactful, and subtle in person with our friends and acquaintences, saying the "right" thing, being supportive, etc

But admit it, often you would like to just blurt out the truth but don't because that would be not nice

So here is your chance to share what you really want to share with someone, who needs to here it, but you know you really can't say it to them

Here is mine:

To Parent # 1
Saw the school production your child was in , and yes your child does have stage presence, is attractive, and does an good job, but no, they should NOT consider a career in musical theater, with the intention of applying exclusively to schools or programs that need auditions. And yes, they do a nice job in the dance numbers, but no, they really have no talent in that area. Be smart, and guide them so they have lots of chances for a variety of schools- they are smart and charming but, being a dance or musical theater major is just not gonna happen, even though you see your child as the next big star....

To Parent # 2
Yes, it is wonderful your daughter is so popular, that boys call her all the time, that she is out every weekend with dates, but did you know that she has a really horrid reputation? That she as seen as very "friendly"?

Yes, I know these are a bit petty and snipey, that's why I don't say anything, but nod and change the subject, but it does feel good to vent here

Oh yeah
To Parent #3
Yes, congratulations on your son getting into College XYZ.....I think he will have a great time....too bad he cheated his way through high school

See you can't actually say this stuff, but man, it would feel good!!

Where should I go for pre med?

I plan on going to/getting into med school and currently am deciding between what colleges I should go to in order to increase my chances. Right now, I’m deciding between UTSA, UTD, and UT Austin. For me, money is a concern but isn’t a HUGE concern. So my problem boils down to this. I know that if I go to UTSA or UTD then I can get a pretty good GPA but might have less opportunities and a quality of education. However, if I go to UT Austin I might have a worse GPA since it is a very hard school. But everyone is telling me that I’ll have a MUCH better time at UT Austin as well as more opportunities and connections. Also I feel like if I do go to UT Austin and do as well as I would do at UTSA or UTD that I’ll get overshadowed by all the tons of smart people at UT Austin which hurts my chances to get into med school. Overall, are the connections and overall quality of education worth the risk of getting a bad gpa for UT Austin?

SAIC vs. MICA

Hey y'all!

I'm currently a high school senior who applied to SAIC and MICA. I got in to both schools, but I'm not sure which one I want to attend.

I applied to SAIC with interests in Painting & Drawing as well as Visual Communication Design Illustration Concentration. And for MICA I applied as a Painting major with Illustration as my concentration.

I got a 75k scholarship from SAIC, and I got an initial 55k from MICA.

While SAIC gave me more scholarship, I would still like some insight on what SAIC and MICA are like before I decide. Because either way, I still have a TON of tuition I would pay @ either school.

If anyone can tell me what their experiences are like at SAIC/MICA that would be great!

Last year the first wave of Honors acceptances were received by mail around Dec 20. Invitations to interview for Top Scholars were then mailed in mid-late January. Any guesses as to how the process will go this year?

Hi, in my supplement essay I wrote that I was excited to take part in research in "fighting against antibiotic resistant drugs" when I meant to say "fighting against antibiotic resistant infections."
Additionally, I had one more typo that said "I wondered about my his medication" (his is correct in this case).
Should I email and submit a freshly corrected paper?

Hello, I'm a current junior and I really want to go to UPenn for biomedical engineering for premed or another really good school. Here's a list of colleges I know for sure I'll apply to: U of Michigan, Boston University, Northeastern University, Boston College, UVA, Georgetown, UPenn, Cornell, Carnegie Melon, John Hopkins, WashU, Princeton
ALSO: would it greatly help my application to take the SAT again and get 1500 or higher?

GPA: 4.9 (weighted)
SAT score: 1480 (not superscored, 3rd time taking it)
Essay section: 18/24 (rip)
AP Scores:
Chem: 3 (had a bad teacher, not submitting this, but had A+ in the class)
CompSci: 4 (online course, should I include that?)
Current APs I'm in: Bio, Calc BC, US gov, English language
I have A+ in Calc BC so I think there's a chance I'll get a 5 if I keep up my work. Also doing well in bio and might get 5 also.
Subject tests:
Chem: 720
I'm planning on taking math 2 and biology subject tests

Extracurriculars:
Volunteer at local library, about 300 volunteer hours most during the summer
Lead Programmer on robotics team, founded robotics program in 8th grade at my school
I fly small airplanes and have a private pilot's license
Certified scuba diver since 2013
Technology council representative at my school, vice president next year most likely
Quiz Bowl tv team captain (we answer trivia on local news)
I went to Spain for a language immersion program for 2 weeks (probably won't put that on application...)

Societies:
Asenus society (volunteer hours related)
Mu alpha theta (math)
Most likely cum laude honor society (I'll find out in January)
other societies I will find out in May

thank you so much if you read all of this

NYU Admission

I recently got admitted to NYU, which has been my dream school forever. I applied to the Gallatin school with the intention of a pre-med track ( I would major in neuroscience or public health and minor in political science and Spanish). I didn't receive any aid though- I am expected to pay the full 78k, but my parents aren't very wealthy ( income of ~110k). I feel like my financial status is being held at the same standard as the "rich" who go to NYU seeing my tuition price. Is it worth it to attend with the goals I have in mind? And if I came out of NYU with the intention of taking a few gap years to work so I can save up for med school, will I come out having a job that will have a good salary?

Making our list - General Merit Aid / Sticker Price Question

So, son is currently a junior in high school and a T25 and under contender based on GPA and practice test scores. We have high income but are house and retirement savings poor (living on Coastal California). He has a 529 owned by a grandparent. Merit aid is a consideration for our family as we would need to take loans for certain out of state publics and definitely for private school like Notre Dame.

Q: I think he will apply early action and I hear on Podcasts that merit aid generally is only available if you are in the top 25% of applicants at a particular school. So, I'm looking for more information from parents who have gone through the process regarding the interplay of merit aid and applying early. Thank you!

2020 PRE-SCREEN THREAD

Hello, music major hopefuls!

This thread is designed to catalog our confirmed audition dates after receipt of prescreening results. This will allow us to celebrate each other's successes, give future hopefuls an idea of when prescreen results roll in for a variety of schools, and even arrange meet-ups for common audition dates if so desired. Please keep sidebar conversations to a minimum.

In previous years, @Mezzo'sMama rather generously kept track, so many thanks there. I'm going to paste her succinct and clear instructions below:

Please send me a PM with pre-screen acceptances or acceptance of an audition date if no pre-screen is required. Let me know when you have received a firm offer of the date. By sending them via PM, it helps to keep the thread neat and allows you to flag it so that you're notified when something actually new is posted.

I will be updating the thread regularly and listing the new entries in color.

Remember to tell me what the instrument or voice type is and if you're reporting for your son or daughter and the degree sought (BM, BA, etc)

Best of Luck to Everyone!
