chance me (college admissions)

Hey everyone, I am currently a senior in high school, and I was wondering what my chances for Stanford, Cal Tech, MIT, Georgia Tech, Brown, Princeton, Harvard, UCLA (engineering school), and UC Berkeley (engineering school) are. It would be appreciated if you could also include an estimated percentage of my chance of getting in :)

I am a middle class/upper middle class Asian female. I go to one of the top ten public high schools in California. Everyone is very competitive and aims for the top. My major is applied mathematics.

GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.4 weighted

Classes:

Freshmen (not allowed to take APs):
Alg 2 honors, English 9 honors, Biology (no honors offered), Health/Civics (required and no honors offered), PE (required), Engineering Design, Chinese 3 (taken outside of school but accredited and part of GPA)

Sophomore (only APs offered are AP Chinese and AP Music Theory):
PreCalc honors, English 10 honors, Chemistry honors, World History honors, PE (required), AP Music Theory

Junior:
AP Calc BC, English 11 honors (no AP English offered), AP Chemistry, Ap Physics 1, US history honors (could have taken APUSH but didn’t), AP Statistics

Senior:
Multivariable Calc/Linear Algebra (community college course through my high school), AP Literature and Composition, AP Biology, AP Physics C, Gov/Econ (required and no honors offered), AP Computer Science

Stats:

AP exams: I received a 5 on all the AP exams I took. In addition to the APs I took in school, I also self-studied:
Freshmen - AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, AP Psychology, AP Human Geography
Sophomore - AP Environmental Science, AP Chinese

SAT (took once in sophomore): 1580 (800 math, 780 English), writing: 7, 8, 7
ACT (took once in sophomore): 36

SAT Subject Tests:
Sophomore - Math 2 (800)

School Clubs:

Club A (name could reveal the school I go to): club that performs music at senior centers, autistic children center, library, etc.
Freshmen - member
Sophomore - Secretary
Junior - President
Senior - President

Math Club - member all four years
Cryptography Club - member all four years

Club B (art, music, community service)
- examples of what we do: teaching the members of the club calligraphy, making instruments, holding annual music benefit concert, making hospital patients cards
member all four years

Summer Camps:

I started a piano teaching business with a website. I taught the summer before sophomore, junior, and senior year.

Community Service:
Club A performances (all four years), taught Chinese children English in Taiwan (summer before sophomore, junior, and senior), piano accompanist for young kid choirs
I started a piano trio with two other people in sophomore year. We go around our area and give small charity concerts.

Extracurriculars:
Choir - member since 2005 (I was 3), piano accompanist for the lower grades (since freshmen year)
Piano - started in first grade, awards below

Awards:
Piano:
Freshmen - selected performer at festival, honorable mention at regional competition, honorable mention at regional competition
Sophomore - MTAC State Panel Honors (about top 50 of state receive), selected performer at festival, second place at regional competition, first place at regional competition, first place at regional competition

Math:
AIME (American Invitational Math Examination) Qualifier (freshmen, sophomore, junior)

Community service:
Gold Presidential Award (freshmen, sophomore, junior)

Academic:
National Merit Finalist
National AP Scholar

Recommendation Letters:
Multivariable Calculus/Linear Algebra professor, AP Physics C teacher, and school counselor rec letters are probably just average.

Math tutor that I am TA for - I have been his student since fourth grade. In one of the past rec letters he wrote for me, he said that in his 24 years of teaching, I am among the top of his students. He said that I am not only intelligent, but also humble and strives to improve. He also thinks I am well behaved and does not act out of line.

Piano teacher - I have been her student since seventh grade. I am one of her top students. She sees me as extremely hardworking, determined, and dedicated. This is shown by how much I practice and how well I respond to her comments. She also knows that I started going to piano competitions in seventh grade (most “good” people started at around 8), and did not receive any awards until ninth grade. I was rejected for two straight years. She saw me continue to work hard and not give up.

Essays:
Common App: My common app has the main theme of thankfulness, which leads to two sub-themes of my desire to help those less fortunate, and how I always strive to be the best version of myself. It starts with an experience I had when meeting a disabled person of my age. I wrote about how it is so unfair that some people are less fortunate, and how I want to help them. I also talked about how I am so thankful for the life that I have, and how that makes me strive to be the best version of myself. I connected this to piano by describing the dark moments (losing for two years, comparing myself to the other competitors who were way better than me, etc.), and then writing about how I didn’t let it get to me because I just wanted to learn and improve. Then, I wrote about how I used the opportunities I had to hopefully inspire others and help them (starting a trio to give benefit concerts, teaching Chinese kids english, being a TA, teaching piano, making seniors and autistic kids smile from club A performances).

Supplementals: I think my supplementals were fairly strong. I tried to get these qualities across in my supplementals: thankful, humble, determined, passionate.

Thank you so much!

Hi everyone, how do you guys think about the SSP, is it worth applying? How hard is it to get in? (Astrophysics) Also, I loved cosmology since I was a child, but have no awards (i was living in Sibiria for 8 years and now on a tiny island in the middle of pacific, so I couldn't participate in any of those).
Anyways, happy new year!!

What is the point of a Post-Graduate year? Is a school offering one a positive or a negative?

One of the schools my kid is accepted at offers a "post-graduate" year. What exactly is the point of this? As does having such an option negatively impact the regular grade 9-12 kids at the school?

The only reason I have heard why anyone would want to add a 13th year of high school would be for a poorly performing student of wealthy parents who wants an extra year to raise grades and maybe get into a better college.

It seems ridiculous that a school would even offer such an option, because I interpret it as an encouragement for students to slack. It should go without saying that graduates of a prep school should be ready to study at college.

I also worry that "postgraduate" students are going to expect a more freewheeling environment that a university might offer, specifically with alcohol and whatnot, and would introduce bad behavior to the rest of the students at the school.

I'd really like to hear from other parents (and students) about this, because I can only negatives with a postgraduate year and the fact that a school offers one is making me seriously reconsider that school.

Genuine Freshman foul-up

Hey everybody!,
So, I am currently a Junior in high school. In my freshman year, I moved 700 miles away from my hometown in the middle of the year, before I moved I really lost all motivation and was in a severe bout of depression. Of course, I didn't really think about the future whatsoever and let my grades fall to sub 3.0 levels. However, since going to my current school I have had a 4.0 ever since the second semester of my freshman year and am currently taking the most challenging courses available to me, including a college math class. Senior year, I will be taking all college courses at the local community college. I was a USSYP finalist, received multiple schoolwide awards, organized fundraisers for local immigration groups, participate in two sports, have a weekend job, and am top of my class. I really messed up, and I just want an honest idea of where I stand in admissions, and if I have a chance at more selective colleges.
Thanks everyone :)

Is AP Seminar Worth Taking?

$

I might take AP Seminar senior year but I'm not sure if I should. I won't be able to finish the whole AP Capstone program though. Next year will be the first time our school will be offering the course, so I'm not sure what the course load will be like, and I've heard that it varies a lot depending on your teacher. Here are several questions I have. If you take/took/know someone who took this course, it would be fantastic if you could help me out.

1. How much homework is it?
2. What's the course load compared to other AP classes (AP BC Calc, AP World, APUSH, AP Lang, etc)? (ie. is it chill)
3. What do you do in class?
4. Is it worth taking?
5. Does the class look good on college apps?
6. Is the information you learn valuable?
7. Is it relatively easy to get an A?
8. Do colleges take it as a credit?

Hi All - we did the round of conservatories last year. My son made it through 4 of 5 prescreens and attended 2 auditions/interviews (NEC didn't have audition/interview for BM Composition, and he didn't get to interview stage with Curtis).

We'd be happy to share his Berklee and Boston Conservatory Interview/Audition experience if anyone would find it helpful.

Also our experiences of staying in Boston (he had to go twice).

Thanks! ClassCompMom

D21 journey

$

I didn't start a thread like this for S19 but I've read a few recently and I kind of love them so I'm going to start a thread here on D21's college admissions search and I hope I'll get some good advice and support along the way!

D21 is a strong student. Honors in all subjects currently with a 3.75 GPA and a weighted GPA of 4.4. She's the kind of student who leans more English/History than Math/Science but can hold her own in the STEM classes by just grinding it out. She'd be happier writing papers than doing math and science problem sets but she does what needs to be done to survive in those STEM classes. Our high school is a hyper competitive, large public school with the top 10% of kids going to elite universities. Kids get into Ivies when they are legacies or athletes but that's pretty much the way it goes and no other types of students get into those schools. Multiple kids go to schools like Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Duke, Emory, etc. LACs are not popular but that's where S19 focused his search and D21 will have mostly LACs on her list as well.

She's not sure of major yet. Thinking political science, English, history, psychology, communications....just not math or science. No idea what she wants to do as a career. We are cool with that. S19 is the same way.

She's not as "intellectual" as S19 - won't sit around and discuss philosophy at night, etc., but does love a good political debate. "Fun" in terms of school spirit is more important to her than it was to S19. She's a dancer and may want to dance extracurricularly in studio or as a member of the dance team for football/basketball. She's outgoing and social.

She's been taking practice ACTs and self-studying for a while. Wasn't happy with her last score and is going back in tomorrow for another test. Had a decent PSAT that went up almost 200 points from last year so she may switch to SAT if this ACT doesn't go up. I'd like her to get to a 31 or 32 ACT or 1400 SAT. She's hit a 31 in ACT practice but was pretty short of that on the actual test she took in October.

We are full pay. Bleh. I think she would get merit at Denison and Furman but S19 had merit from some of his acceptances and we didn't make him go to those schools and agreed to be full pay for him. That begs the question of whether we let D go ED somewhere in order to get a bump in admissions even though we would be giving up seeing any merit at some of the schools on her list.

Her very tentative list includes:

Denison
Furman
William and Mary
Davidson
Colgate
U Richmond
Wake Forest

Maybe - Santa Clara, Bates, Boston College, Villanova, Washington and Lee

We are visiting Davidson, Richmond, W&L and William and Mary this spring.

Until she gets a higher ACT or SAT, we are kind of in a holding pattern. Can't wait to see where she ends up!
