Virginia Tech is my ride or die...how should I proceed?

$

Alright so I applied ED to Virginia Tech's engineering school with my eventual major being computer engineering. I got DEFERRED (I'm in state). Basic facts, I'm a female who's mom, dad, uncle, and grandpa all have engineering degrees from Tech. I'm in a plethora of clubs/sports including:
- Debate (4yrs)
- Varsity Swimming (4yrs)
-School's VERY FIRST Robotics team
-Beta Club (Vice President)
- History Honor Society (2yrs)
-Math Honor Society(1yr)
-Science Honor Society(1yr)
-Model United Nations(1yr)
-Key Club(3yrs)
-Student Advisory Council ( both home school and trade school I attend)(1yr)
-Sole tech crew for the entire theatre department
-Forensics (1yr)
-National Honor Society (1yr)
-Appalachia Service Project (through a local church) (2yrs)
*Math SAT: 570 (25 ACT)
*English SAT: 700
*GPA: 4.0358
*Class Rank: 58 out of 297
This year I am taking AP Computer Science in place of a formal math class, but starting this month (Jan 2020) I will be taking Calculus 1 at my local community college (took pre calc junior year). I'm the leader of our school's robotics team who placed first this past year at nationals. I'm convinced that I was not accepted because of my ABHORRENTLY low math SAT score, however I believe my saving grace is the fact that I have my Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician certification. This is a pretty weighty certification that allowed me to have valuable mentorships and internships with my local armed forces groups, and General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT). To get this I took the course (hardest thing in my life but thankfully I got an A) at my local trade school, and this year I'm in the second part working towards my Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). I went to the trade school instead of the Governor's School for Science and Technology because without my CCENT, I wouldn't have had the internship possibilities open to me, and I wouldn't have the opportunity to do the social networking with potential employers that I've done. Anyway, Tech is the ONLY school that I have applied to and if I don't get in I plan on doing a year at community college and transferring in because I want nothing more than to go there. Several of my teachers have advised that I make an appointment with admissions and explain to them that I am taking calculus, why I didn't go to GOV schools since its the hardest courses available technically, why my math SAT is so low, and the fact that I want this more than anything in the entire world. I want to do everything in my power to put myself on admission's radar, so If I get rejected here in February, I know I did everything in my power to help my chances . Everyone I've spoken to says yes go to admissions, guidance counselor says no. My question is: SHOULD I TALK TO ADMISSIONS (4 HR DRIVE FROM WHERE I LIVE)(Also assume I have a flawless speech reversed and prepared to the highest extent beforehand) To anyone who's read this far, thank you from the bottom of my heart and I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts!

Chances of getting into Roxbury Latin

Hey, I am wondering my chances of getting into Roxbury Latin. I got a 2301 on the ssat or 98 percentile, and do lots of extracurricular activities such as piano, model in, and I also take Chinese outside of school. I also play hockey. My grades are alright as I have one A-, two As, and two A+s. I am in middle school and applying for ninth grade. I am also wondering if I have a higher chance of being accepted if I have legacy to Harvard? Thanks!!!

LSU Admissions C/O 2024

From other discussions, it sounds like the majority are in for a long wait for admissions. We are OOS. My daughter applied Oct 30, 2019 for Priority Deadline and has received a log-in to the portal. The portal doesn’t provide any status information. It only displays three (3) green checks that they have received the documents. Does anyone have an insight to LSU’s admissions process?

Emailing Counselors, Urgent!

Hi,

So I made a really dumb mistake in submitting my applications as soon as possible without going over them with my counselor/parent. I didn't realize that the additional info section could be used to explain bad grades and other things. I got not great grades in 2 classes in junior year because I was in the process of finding a new medication for the entirety of 1st semester, which really affected my mental health. Even though I've already submitted, should I email the counselors at my top colleges explaining the situation, because I'd rather not have them think poorly of me because of something that wasn't really my fault. Or is there a way to edit/start over with my application? I was debating whether or not to withdraw applications and just start over on the Coalition app, but I'd lose all of my recs. Any help is appreciated.

On A Scale of Marie Kondo to Fyre Festival, How Ready For The Holidays Are You?

Saw this on social media and it cracked me up and seemed perfect for the CC Parent Cafe given past threads on both Marie Kondo and Fyre Festival.

House is decorated except for the tree. Real tree went up yesterday and we'll decorate today or tomorrow. We always do it late, just a few days before Christmas, but first time without any kid help. One gets home Tuesday and the other is abroad and won't be home for the first time ever for Christmas. :(

Gifts all purchased. Just waiting for a couple to show up still. Husband is in charge of wrapping. Beginning baking today and will go on for a few days. Need to buy more perishable food items tomorrow or Monday. Not stressed...yet.

How you doing on your holiday prep, whatever holiday you celebrate?

Duke has extended its RD deadline to January 5 and UVA has extended to January 6th. D20 just got an email that Fordham has extended their deadline to January 13. This is our first year watching admissions this closely-- are deadline extensions common? I don't remember seeing them before. Does anyone know of any other extensions?

Chances for UofT computer science? (American student)

$

Merry Christmas! I'm a current American high school junior (3rd year) interested in the University of Toronto for computer science. I'm not sure how Canadian universities evaluate applications, so I'll state my credentials as I would for any American university.

GPA unweighted: 3.7
GPA weighted: 4.2 (probably going up to a 4.3-4.4 after junior year due to AP courses)
Upward trend. Poor performance freshman year and consistent improvement afterward.

However, my GPA could drop. Unfortunately, that's a possibility. I can't say how much because first-semester final exam results haven't come back yet. Let's roll with the current stats.

AP courses taken: AP Computer Science Principles, AP Computer Science A, AP Calculus AB, AP French Language, AP English Language, AP European History, AP US History

Honors courses taken: Physics Honors, Precalculus Honors, English I and II Honors, Biology Honors, Algebra 2 Honors

ACT Composite: 36
AP tests: 2 5s so far, expecting all 4s or 5s for this year's AP courses.

Extracurriculars: CS teaching at library, Yale humanities program, hackathon wins, quiz bowl wins, and some other stuff

OK, so that's my basic CV. I also have a few questions:
1) Are extracurriculars even taken into consideration by UofT (or McGill, UBC etc.)?
2) Does UofT (or any other Canadian university) consider freshman year of high school? It would be great if they didn't, as I didn't do well in freshman year.
3) Are the admissions standards for American and Canadian applicants the same?
4) Does UofT exercise a GPA cutoff and, if so, am I above that cutoff?

And perhaps most importantly:
5) What specific prerequisites or course requirements should I be aware of for UofT computer science or any related major? How should I plan my senior year schedule to meet these criteria?

In addition to these, of course, there's the main question: What are my chances for admission to UofT computer science with these credentials?

Because I have too much time on my hands, I went through all of the old threads and pages I could find about significant college-sponsored National Merit scholarships. Here's an updated list, sorted by what I hope is an understandable format. If you have a correction or addition to make, please speak up--it would really useful if this list or a similar list were kept up-to-date.

Why it's so hard to get into an under 15% acceptance rate school

$
0
0
Many kids have just been deferred or denied by their top choice college. For the purposes of many of the kids on CC right about now, let's assume that I'm talking about highly selective colleges with acceptance rates in the teens and lower.

TLDR: If you aren't hooked and are lacking in something they need or want according to section C7 of their CDS and the college’s institutional needs, your odds of getting in are even lower than you think, probably well below the published acceptance rate, except for maybe the very most exceptional students. Exceptional isn’t the same as average excellent.

My TLDR advice: Assume you are unlikely to get in and concentrate on your other applications.

Let's use Cornell as an example, because it is allegedly the "easy" or "lower" Ivy (which always amuses me.)
DISCLAIMER: I am not a numbers person at all, so these numbers might be off. Feel free to add or correct.

Class of 2022 (using CDS '18-19 and data from Ivy Coach)
1. Cornell received 6,319 ED apps. Of those, they admitted 1533 and filled nearly 47% of the class. The remaining 53% will be duking it out from a much bigger applicant pool.
2. Many of the ED apps were likely recruited athletes, legacies, or other hooked students.
3. About 1030 of the other ED applicants were deferred to RD. The rest were denied
4. Of deferred applicants, around 15% of those might have been accepted in the RD round. (154 applicants)
5. In the RD round, Cornell received 45,165 apps. Of those, they accepted 4053. That's just under a 9% acceptance rate RD.
6. 6683 students were offered Waitlist. 164 were accepted from that.

Deferrals are offered to students who they feel could succeed at Cornell, but they want to wait and see if "better" applicants apply RD. (What makes a “better" applicant is the $64,000 question.) The deferred app is put into the RD pool where it's read again, but of course, the deferred applicant is now competing against tens of thousands, as opposed to a few thousand. A deferred app doesn’t have any advantage over an RD app.

The odds of acceptance from the waitlist are even lower, at just above 2%. Waitlists are often considered a polite rejection, though of course, it works out for some.

Let's look at who matriculated to Cornell in the Class of 2022. (Total 3325.)
1. First gen students totaled 455.
2. Nearly 17% were related to alumni= 558.
3. 6% were recruited athletes= 199
4. 10% of the class are international students= 332

That's 1534 of the 3325 who matriculated. That leaves us with 1791 who are possibly unhooked applicants, including kids who are over-represented. As we know, over represented kids might be Caucasian or Asian and from suburban and/or affluent areas around the country, but most commonly the East Coast. We can reduce 1791 even further if we take out numbers of students who identify as people of color.

33% of accepted applicants (not including Asians) self-identified as students of color=884. Now, of course, there could be overlap with the above first gen, alumni, athletes, and international students. But if you aren't URM, your odds of getting in are even lower.

Consider section C7 of the CDS, which lists what they consider when they assess your app. If the applicant isn't hitting the metric for anything Cornell considers "Very Important", “Important”, or “Considered,” your application is weakened, unless it's offset by something they need or want (Institutional Needs and/or hooks.) For example, if you have a "low" standardized test score, your app is weakened. Some kids do have low test scores, but it is very possible that the student with a low score is hooked in some way they need or want.

This is a VERY long-winded explanation of why it's so hard to get in. If you are deferred or waitlisted, it's in your best interest to be realistic and do a great job with your other applications, rather than hoping for a miracle. Good luck to you all!

My son is taking the SSAT for the last time this Saturday and he’s always been a top math student in all of the accelerated classes. But he got a 77th percentile on the December test and an 83rd percentile on the October test (he did not take the November test.) Does anyone have any tips as to how he can raise his grade during these last few days? The scores just came out yesterday, and we were both floored, as he’s been taking practice tests. Thank you!

COSMOS 2020 Thread

$

Hi guys!

From what i can see, at the moment there isn't a thread for COSMOS 2020 so I'm starting one.

Just some general questions I have
1. best campus (like scenery and just general niceness)
2. most and least competitive campus or clusters
3. other ppl who have gotten in stats or watever

i really want to do a bio cluster because I LOVE biology, but i heard those are REALLLY competitive

my stats
asian gorl (if that matters)
9th grade (which sucks because 9th graders don't really get in ;(

academics
-4.0 GPA hopefully
- taking APWH and AP Calc BC this year
- took 5 APs last year (Calc BC, Bio, Macro/Microecon, Psych)
- 2 800's on SAT Subject tests (Bio M and Math 2)

extracurriculars
- choir since grade 1 (but that probs don't really matter cuz its a STEM camp rip)
- science bowl since 6th grade, went to nats last year and got 6th out of 48 teams
- and thats basically it rip

( ^^^ not trying to flex bros. i don't want to be that one pretentious fool who has a huge ego :( but thats wat i sound like right now ik)

last year i applied but i didn't get in. probs cuz i realized cosmos was a thing like 2 weeks before the deadline but watever.

do you think i have a chance? i don't have that many sciency extracirriculars which sucks.
also which cluster/school should i apply.

(note - i realllllly want to go to COSMOS because freedom from parents and actualy hands on experience. also everyone says COSMOS is really fun and interesting)
